The theme seen in Upgrade are 

Investigation 

This is shown when the main character is searching for the killer that killed his wife and made him disabled. This is shown in the seen where the main character has tracked down one of the killer that was  at the killing of his wife to their house. The theme then switches to the revenge as the main character kills the killer at the house and then goes searching for the other killers that where their that day as well but also goes back to investigating into who else was there.

Revenge 

The one of the themes that is shown is revenge as the main character lover was killed and gripples him due to the incident that acquired. Then when he gets the means to get his revenge he goes on a search for the ones that murdered his lovers. This lead to him going to many different location during his search where he finds out at one of  people who was their the day his wife was murder and then he activates the chip on the back of the neck to take control and then gain the advantage and kills one of the men that where their that night.

Crime 

The second theme of this thriller is that the crime that are committed as people are killed and the main character feels no guilt about what he has done but this also applies to the one that crippled him and  killed his wife.

Action 

Their are multiple action scenes that go on during the the thriller as the main character get into a fight with on of the men that killed his wife and later on the a man that has a cybernetic enhancement that allows for him to shoot bullets out of his arm.(01:53)
